On sighting a bird, it is best to observe it silently, estimate its size, and note the colour of its beak, legs, eyes as well as other parts, the shape of its wings and tail, its posture and type of flight, its habitat and call or song. Then consult your guide.

Some interesting aspects of bird behaviour include pretting, oiling and sunbathing of feathers; courtship; nesting; territorial defense; parental care and migration. Observing and recording behaviour is always very absorbing.

It is very useful to maintain a regular and detailed record of your observations and a Checklist of birds. Over a period of time, these records could provide clues to important aspects like the migration patterns of some birds.
